TRIBE.net may be on the verge of ending. I'm going to create a Dark_Ambient_Music@yahoogroups.com

TRIBE.net may be on the verge of ending. I'm going to create a Dark_Ambient_Music@yahoogroups.com
so we can reconvene there, if people want to.

I moderate a lot of larger tribes here at tribe and I have my hands full trying to migrate posts over to yahoo
(while I plan the largest live looping festival on the planet in the next month)
so I don't have time to do this,

However, is someone from this group , does have the time, would you consider
going back throught the posts in this tribe and , at least, copying the one's that have
lots of lists for things to listen to and the most interesting and salient discussions
and send them to Dark_Ambient_Music@yahoogroups.com?

that way we wont' have to lose this information if tribe.net tanks.

By the way, I truly love the paradigm and the community created here at tribe
and I will be a member until the day that they cease to be an online presence.
I hope I'm wrong about it, but things don't look good.

Darren, the wonderful guy who has singlehandley kept this place going in recent times, resiigned
a few days ago after he claimed to have recieved an abusive email from the owner.

The owner seems to have no great interest in keeping this site going,

I wish a rich philanthropist would buy it from him, and rehire Darren and a small team of people necessary to keep
it up and running continually (which has been a little bit too large a job for one human being).

Anyone know a philanthropist with big bucks and commitment to the creative communities of the earth?

Hello dark ambientists.
I am not too sure if this track fully fits into this category (maybe dark downtempo?), But Rick suggested I post this here.
Its called "Thigle Burn".
It should play automatically from www.myspace.com/circus0fmind

Any honest feedback or criticism is appreciated.

Cheers.

I've been shopping around for where to have my next two CDs made. I'm doing small runs of 200-500 and I want full-color on-disc printing and *nice* packaging (not jewel boxes with crappy looking inkjet printed inserts). The best pricing and packaging options for small runs I have found is this company located in the Santa Cruz area http://www.mastertrack.com/index.html and I wonder of any of you musicians have dealt with this company (Rick?). I'm concerned about the quality control of the CD pressings (don't wanna end up with a lot of coasters and angry buyers)...

Atrium Carceri

Hello,

I really enjoy the sounds of atrium carceri. Can anyone here recommend other similar artists? They barely have a melodic element, but it's there. I'm trying to get away from the more soundscapish stuff out there, but not too close to actual industrial beats, etc. The darker the better. I love In Slaughter Natives, but sometimes it moves just a tad bit too much for me.

If any of you are musicians and would like to work on virtual dark ambient projects online, let me know. I love to send original samples and loops back and forth to create tracks. I haven't done anything like that for years!

Thanks!

KOLN LIVE LOOPING FESTIVAL: Fear Falls Burning

I played the Koln Live Looping Festival last night which had a wonderful packed turnout
and a really great lineup of 10 artists from 5 countries and was really lucky to meet and
catch Dirk Serries' set with his new project 'FEAR FALLS BURNING'.

Dirk had a really great ambient project in the 90's called Vidma Obmana and hails from
Belgium.

His new project is guitar driven dark ambient and it was really wonderful stuff.

Check him out if you get a chance.

Off to play the 2nd Berlin Live Looping Festival day after tomorrow and then on to Munchen,
Konstanz, the Norwich Live Looping Festival, London (where the day after my gig my wife and I have
tickets to see the reuninon of My Bloody Valentine in Camden Town---wooooohoooooo!, then the
Celtronica Festival in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, then Belfast, Dublin and finally home around
the 4th of July.

If one wants to hear some astonishingly good new 'deep space' dark ambient music, one could do worse than to check out the soundtrack to INLAND EMPIRE. David Lynch has created some extraordinary music, especially the 12-minute piece called "Woods Variation" (also used as the soundtrack to a short film Lynch has done called "Ballerina" which may be seen on the 'Extras' DVD of INLAND EMPIRE)...

Though you might enjoy this little number...

"If you enjoy it slow and low, Cologne-based Bohren & Der Club Of Gore will very likely do the trick. In fact, with each subsequent release the quintet's "horror-jazz" grows increasingly refined (i.e. incredibly fucking spare).
And hey, they've been at it awhile: Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Reiner Henseleit (who left the band in 1996 and was replaced a year later by the ivory-tickling saxophonist Christoph Cl?) and Robin Rodenberg began playing together in 1988, mining a metallic hardcore sound. Subsequently, as Bohren, they released Gore Motel in 1994, followed by the 2xCD Midnight Radio (1995), Sunset Mission (2000), and Black Earth (2002; reissued on Ipecac in 2004). Bohren's forth studio album, Geisterfaust, is translated from the German as "Ghost Fist," but the five extended pieces feel more like ghostly tip-toes. Admittedly, though, each track's titled with a finger theme, so I suppose my idea wouldn't work. Besides, there's a fistful of heaviness breathing within the airy wraps of bass (kontra, fretless, 8-string), tuba, and bass trombone and the exceedingly spacious Fender Rhodes, sax, and brushed drums.

Bohren are often dubbed horror-jazz, though this hardly defines the sound. Consider, maybe, the recent crop of jazz-oriented Rune Grammofon released by Nils Okland and In The Country (featuring Morten Qvenild of the hyperactive Shining) or even something as downcast as non-jazz labelmates Deathprod, then remove 1/2 of the notes and replace any and all folksiness and/or Blue Note overtones with foreboding minimalist dirge and a Sunn 0))) or Khanate streak. Now, mix in some John Cage, because Geisterfaust showcases Bohren as masters of silence, using space and shadows rather than volume increases or additional sounds to create (and maintain) dynamics.

The tracks here are all relatively long, but the most expansive in all senses is the grandiloquent 20-minute opener, "Zeigefinger" ("Index Finger"), wherein they lug in a tuba and a nine-person choir. The track plods into the starting gate. Pauses continue to grow. Tones sustain miraculously. Voices rise in the background like traces of frozen powder. The drums increase in heaviness, but never break out. It's an appropriate way to start the LP-- you'd be hard-pressed to locate a single riff or roll on the entire album. The three of the remaining pieces-- "Daumen" ("Thumb"), "Ringfinger", and "Mittelfinger"-- fall into a similar line, with varying degrees of percussion and bass, and more or less pronounced vibraphone ("Ringfinger," for instance, just about establishes a mallet hook).

The final composition, "Kleinerfinger" ("Pinky") comes closest to the sound of past releases, a more crumbling "Twin Peaks" soundtrack on Codeine (band, not drug). But "Kleinerfinger" lacks that ineffible heavy feel (background built on octave-downed bass?). It features a steady high-hat and snare rattles like a slow motion whirlpool; there are also beautiful electric piano accents and a smoky saxophone. The most upbeat of the pieces (which isn't saying too much) as well as the most straightforward jazz, it's also the least interesting.

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have been championed regularly (and fervently) by the fine folks at Aquarius Records in San Francisco, and they'd appeal to listeners of black metal as well as drone (Stephen O'Malley gives them props on his website). But for all of that gloom/doom, I could also see them appealing to fans of minimalist ambience and spare electronics, as well those who enjoy adventurous "out" jazz. But regardless of your genre identification, you'd do best to turn this up, concentrate, and let it work its way into your head."

Marisa is an accomplished singer and electronic music composer who
is actively looking for people to collaborate with in the bay area (she's in the south bay).
She's really interested in dark ambient, goth and industrial musics, stylistically.

I wanted to introduce you all to her because I know there are a lot of talented composers in this
tribe who would probably love to work with an excellent trained vocalist.

She'll probably be joining this tribe in a day or so, so , PLEASE, friend her and make her welcome.

sincerely, Rick Walker aka nO thiN-g
(who will also be playing at 10 p.m. on St. Paddy's day
with his new industrial belly dancing project this Monday night
at the BOX in Santa Cruz (the BLUE LAGOON on Pacific Avenue)

Tribe.net has been purchased by a big corporation and reduced their staff radically.

The are putting pressure on them to produce more income stream. I believe their very
existence is threatened. We can help , I think.

I love Tribe.net. I think it's paradigm of internet communication is the most communally
oriented and artistically oriented of any of the online communities (including MySpace, Friendster,
Facebook, Live Journal, etc.).

I've made more friends here, with similar interests, aesthetically in many different countries; I've set up
tours in countries; planned gigs and learned more specific things about things I've loved than with any other
internet resource.

I would love to urge you guys to buy a premium membership to help keep this community alive.
It's only $5/month or $50/year including a free t-shirt which is pretty cheap.

I have no affiliation with Tribe. I"m just urging you for the sake of all of our communities.

most sincerely,
I have 250 cds to sell, and some spare to send out for people to review. Would anyone like to be the first to review for me?

New Tribe: Personality Theatre

With the moderator's permission I'd like to introduce a new tribe, entitled Personality Theatre.

Description:

"We constantly produce a display, a theatrical scene. For each situation we create the appropriate backdrop and the appropriate lighting. We also have the appropriate actors, mainly ourselves, who appear on the stage. We carry on this kind of play, this theatrical game, so to speak, to feel out the total effect our stage set is having."
-Chogyam Trungpa

A place for the discussion of illusion, delusion, spiritual materialism, creation of personality, destruction and transformation of personality, magic, magick, funhouses, tricksters, labyrinths and carnivals of all sorts...mostly in relation to the growth and evolution of our inner and outer selves.

Essentially, a place to wonder about the masquerade of daily living...for the play we put on for ourselves and others.
(Wasn't that a wonderfully theatrical summation?)

Recent dark ambient releases & recommendations

Two or three recent releases of special merit and worth mentioning (the first two squarely in the dark ambient vein, the last more of a dark ambient-related thing)...

"Jetsun Mila" double-CD by the great French electronic minimalist Elian Radigue: Now playing on my stereo and actually recorded in 1986, this is the sort of long-form drone work she is celebrated for, a la Trilogie De La Mort & Adnos I-II-III

"Deep Frieze" by Sleep Research Facility: the third and latest offering from this minimalist atmospheric artist, which I think outshines his prior album and comes closer to the perfection of his first CD "Nostromo"

"The Lights Are On But No-One's Home" by Diana Rogerson: the long-awaited return of Chrystal Belle Scrodd, produced by Steven Stapleton with contributions by Matt "Irr App (Ext)" Waldron, this is more dark trance than dark ambient and qualifies as classic Nurse With Wound sounds

Badschematic label launch - 4 free albums to download

Badschematic is a non-profit and commerce-free netlabel, distributing unusual and challenging audio works in MP3 format. All of our releases are free to download and share under a Creative Commons License. By operating without monetary concerns, it is Badschematic's goal to bring to your ears unique and unusual sounds that push and break through the boundaries of standard musical convention.

Badschematic is now officially up and running! Our first run of releases is as follows :

Swamps Up Nostrils - "Interdifference" = Originally recorded in 2005, this album finally sees the light of day with its release on Badschematic. Norwegian based artist Swamps Up Nostrils put together his unique blend of sounds, noises, and broken beats to construct eight original tracks for the long overdue release of Interdifference.

V/A - "Schematic Sounds Volume One" = The first installment in Badschematic's compilation series brings you nineteen different tracks by musicians and sound artists from across the globe. Featured on this compilation is a wide variety of strange and unusual sounds, from ambient drones to harsh noise-scapes.

Torstein Wjiik - "Moth Powder" = Moth Powder is a three track EP from Norwegian artist Torstein Wjiik, freely combining harsh bursts of noise, low rumbling drones, and strangely beautiful sound fragments. Moth Powder is also available on CDr from Ambolthue Records, a small indie label releasing experimental music in all variations.

Ligand - "Exogenous Conveyances" = Ligand's sound could be described, upon an initial listen, as "ambient", but that only tells part of the story. A producer of unconventional music that wanders freely between the soothing and the surreal, Ligand works within the context of ambient music but does not worry overmuch about staying within its confines.

To download these releases for free in MP3 format, please visit our website at http://www.badschematic.info

Bone03 - FUNEBRUM "Suicidal Satanik Mantra" ltd 80 copies

At last ! Hailing from the haunted asylums of Poland, Funebrum is a one-(inhu)man project creating icy cold depressive moods with the use of ritualized minimal electronic structures. Black metal influences are blended here with the darkest of ambient purely resulting in 9 obscure and deeply hypnotic tracks. That persitent voice in your head never made itself so clear. A bloodstorm before your eyes ... the gun in your hand and only one way to use it ... A mandatory soundtrack to your intimate self-destruction plans. 7 eur/8$

Just thinking about the ambient stage at the Gaian Mind Festy at night the past couple of days... and there was some really dark, creepy chillout stuff played the first night from two to sixish.. I'd really like to get some of the stuff played. Can you reccomend any artists other then the ones that are listed on this tribe's page. There was a lot of weird quotes, many of them funny.. but still weird. If anyone could help me out with the set list that'd be awesome!

Thanks

Hey folks. Thought I'd let you all know that I've finally gotten a "band" up and working called AOIO - The Audacity of Inanimate Objects. We've got a website and a MySpace page...soon to have a Tribe page as well.

http://www.myspace.com/aoiotheaudacityofinanimateobjects
http://destudios.net/AOIO

The music is kind of experimental, dark (at times) ambient (at times) but a helluva lot of fun to do. Give it a listen on the MySpace page and let me know what you think.

Thanks!

HI all, i just joined to tribe.net and im glad to find a 'dark ambient' group here. Probabaly not all my music fits into that category but a lot of it has recently been heading in that direction.
Please take a look at my website www.jon7.net, where the images on the bottom take you to download and streaming pages. i recommend this one as a quick intro to the style ive been working with:
www.archive.org/details/JON7NET018

anyway nice to be in the tribe, look forward to what you guys have to say about music in general... i've got some recommended artists to list too, but i'll save it for another post!

Hello, all ...

I just found this on Relapse / Release. The name is a bit over the top (imho), but the music itself is very, very nice -- definitely my kind of stuff. A friend of mine also bought me Glenn Danzig's (!!) "Black Aria II", which is also a bit campy regarding artwork, but whose music itself is really good. I'd love to find more of this ...
New Albion Records album release - Erdem Helvacioglu

Dear Friends,

I am happy to announce that my new solo album has been released by the US label "New Albion"!

Here is the link about the album at New Albion's web site : www.newalbion.com/NA131

This is an album of "solo acoustic guitar and live electronics". The whole album was recorded in real-time without any overdubs. I played the acoustic guitar and controlled the live electronics at the same time!

During the making of this album, Ovation Custom Legend 1869 acoustic guitar, TC Electronic Fireworx multi effects processor, Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller and the software Audiomulch were used.

If you are interested in acoustic guitar, ambient - electroacoustic music and the use of live electronics, feel free to check out the album!

Thank you very much and best regards. Looking forward to your comments!

live dark experimental noise show in San Jose this weekend

By the way, I"m going to be doing an experimental show utilizing gongs, found objects and extended vocal
techniques at the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose (366 South First Street between San Salvador and San Carlos)
this coming Saturday night with a creative touring group from Porltand, yourdrugsmymoney.
We will be doing a collaborative set at the end of the night and there is talk of putting this out on yourdrugsmymoneys' record label if it comes out well.

Because I've been so into Power Noize, Noise and Industrial/EBMish stuff lately, my performance will reflect a lot of that
sensibility.

I'm so excited, I just purchase a Feedback eliminator which will allow me to use very heavy distortion with vocals and found objects
without having all the uncontrollable feedback problems that occur with live microphones.

I'll also be projecting my new lo fi, toy digital video animations that I"ve been making at the show.
Come on out to an unusual creative show in the South Bay if you don't have anything to do.

It's 5 bucks at the door (8 p.m. start) and noone will be turned away for lack of funds.

I have gotten into Brian Lustmord over the past couple of years. I have three albums with Brian and I really like each of them in for their unique sound.

Stalker: B Lustmord & Robert Rich: Great deep sounds…
Where Dark Stars Hang: B Lustmord: What texture!
Heresy: B Lustmord: Scary stuff with deep and interesting perspectives…

I would like to expand my dark ambient experiences and Brian Lustmord is my introduction. What are you listening too? And, what are your favs?

Thanks

new dark ambient, though always looking for more ...

Hello, all ...

I've recently snarfed some new dark ambient (and related) music from iTunes ... though i'm always looking for more (preferably digital -- the minimalist in me does not like CDs):

1. A Murder of Angels - In The Air
2. Bill Laswell, Equations of Eternity, Mick Harris - Veve
3. John Everall, Mick Harris, Nigel Ayers - Mesmeric Enabling Device
4. Scorn - plan b
5. Michael Stearns, Ron Sunsinger - Sorcerer
6. Rondellus - Sabbatum (ok, not ambient, but any rendition of Black Sabbath songs on medieval instruments, in Latin no less, is cool with me <smile>)
7. Terra Ambient - The Darker Space
8. Resonant Drift - Flow Mingled Down
9. Various Artists - Dark Seeds: The Sowing (... must ... get ... more ... Coph ... Nia!)
10. Biosphere - Patashnik (ok, I _finally_ snarfed this ... one can only hear "Phantasm" so many times before one of two things happen -- you lose your sanity and fear everything that moves, or you embrace it and purchase the album <smile>)

... i'm _always_ looking for more, especially digital / downloadable stuff.

Regards,

I saw a really good film tonight called, "The Girl in the Cafe" starring Bill Nighy.

I was inspired to write a piece of music about it and I stayed up all night and wrote this.

I only used a vst instrument called 'Jews Harp' in FLStudio Pro.

It came out pretty dark so I'll add it to my growing nO thiN-g project (dark ambient/noise/experimental)

It's here if anyone wants a listen. www.looppool.info/nO thiN-g

If you want more infos about the label, listen some audio sample or buy CRYOSPHERE, please visit:

www.glacialmovements.com

Here a new review of CRYOSPHERE by Aquarius Records www.aquariusrecords.org:

"How can you not love a drone compilation whose tagline is "A musical journey that transports the listener into glacial and unexplored lands where icebergs collide and where everything is frozen?" If you're anything like us (and we think that you are) then the answer is YOU CAN'T!!! Can't NOT love it that is. This limited cd-r compilation is the first release on the Glacial Movements label, an entirely appropriate monicker if you hadn't figured that out for yourself. Some of the names are familiar, Troum, Aidan Baker, some aren't, Tho-So-Aa, Lightwave, Tuu, but they all explore similar barren landscapes of sound, some are frosty and desolate, some are more warm and dark, but this comp is an isolationist drone freak dream come true. Closing The Eternity (who recently released a 7" on Drone Records) start things off with a brooding and buzzing expanse of glistening dark ambience crafted from vibraphone, icewater sounds (!) and hundreds of bells and chimes. Those bells and chimes drift across wide stretches of rumbling shimmer, very evocative of some frozen wasteland. Northaunt are up next with a piece for processed piano, a whirring soundscape of fuzz and hiss and shhhhhhhhhhh, very warm and dreamy, a lot like a more ambient M83, super soft and billowy but with a slightly ominous undercurrent. Tho-So Aa's track is so quiet, it almost sounds like a field recording of a walk through some abandoned city, distant sounds drift in and out of earshot, subtle shuffles and various found sounds surface, about halfway through the music overtakes the natural ambience, deep cavernous rumbles, a softly beeping sonar like tone, all wrapped in delay and echo, like walking through a seaside town thick with nighttime fog. Lightwave chime in with a mix of electronics and "atmospherics" which ends up sounding like a drifting exploration of some murky undersea world, muted and darkly sparkling. Tuu give us seven minutes of slow shifting minimalism, a single note/tone that seems to twist and squirm until it breaks apart into glistening shards of high end shimmer. Next up is AQ faves Troum, with a 12 minute drift through some lost land, a soundscape rife with all sorts of non musical sounds, creaks and groans, clatter and thump, super dark and menacing, a little bit reminiscent of Nurse With Wound's Salt Marie Celeste, a similar feeling of drifting lost across the sea. Up next is another AQ fave Aidan Baker (Nadja, Arc, etc.) whose track is maybe the dreamiest and warmest on the comp. His track almost should have been last as it sounds like the clouds parting, the sun finally breaking through, after a long and harrowing journey through darkness, a rich swirl of dreamy drones and softly shifting melodies. But it's right back into the pit with Netherworld, an ultra minimal soundscape constructed from field recordings, old gates (!), synths and samples. Like traveling through some mysterious cave, no light, only sound and touch to guide you, so pretty, but so haunting. Finally a long slow trudge to the end of the disc from Oophoi, a wash of rich rumbling synths, a lonely sorrowful sound, rife with darkness and isolation. A glacial expanse of frozen sound.
Essential for the drone inclines among you as well as fans of all things dark and ambient."

I wish you all the best!
Netherworld

Taphephobia is a ghostly experimental dark ambient project that Ketil started in the autumn 2004 after leaving the project Northaunt. He finished his first CD "House of Memories" in the summer of 2005 and his second 'Anomie' a few weeks back.
None of them has been released... yet!

Fear Falls Burning, .HROPTR. & Daw - Frontline Ghent, May 13th 2006

Fear Falls Burning: (Bel)
With all the power and noise and aggression and subtlety that comes from a single man performing real-time on the electric guitar through a maze of pedal effects, notes and chords shifting and multiplying over time into dense and trance-inducing walls of sound. Fear Falls Burning succeeds in uncovering a new language that stretches time and brings the listener to the edge multiple times, entrancing with the repetitive yet pure sonic presence of the electric guitar.
New project of vidnaObmana

.HROPTR. (Bel)
You can describe .Hroptr. as a soft Sephiroth, and a more darker sound then Arcana; creating eerie and creepy sounds which give you the shivers on a dark and rainy night.

Hey hey

I am looking for people who are interested in puredata, the open source music/video software. I took a class at Apotheke, in Portland, a few weeks ago on this program, and there seemed to be some interest in continuing to meet up and share patches and abstractions. Unfortunately, the e-mail sheet for this class was lost. So if you were at the class, or if you are interested in puredata, hit me back, or better still join the tribe I just started, called puredata.

Cheers!

Silber Records News, 2 New Releases/4 New Artists

Hey kidz,

I hope everyone is doing well. Kind of a lot going on now that I think about it.

We have some new artists on our roster whose releases will be coming out in the next few months. They are:
Heller Mason - a singer-songwriter recommended to us by Rivulets. He's got kind of a Neil Young ala Harvest vibe.
Black Happy Day - a collaboration between Tara VanFlower (Lycia) & Timothy Renner (Stonebreath). If you know both of these artists already, it sounds exactly like you might think. It's a bit hard to describe, maybe ambient roots music?
Alan Sparhawk - solo-guitarscapes from Alan of Low. Minimalist guitar drone in the style of Aarktica & Remora.
Plumerai - bliss-pop from Boston. We've been friends with these guys since they formed. So it was just a matter of time before it happened. They're musical influences are pretty shoegazery, but they have a style all of their own.

The first issue of our new mini-comic XO is going to be ready soon. I've seen the pencils & I like it a lot. The comic is a black-comedy about a reforming criminal.

There's a recent interview I did at Lallabbau ( http://www.lallabbau.splinder.com ) about Silber Records, Remora, & Lost Kisses.

Some of our music is starting to be digitally distributed by Radio Free Abattoir ( www.shop.radiofreeabattoir.com/osc/index.php?manufacturers_id=17 ). We'll hopefully have everything available through them soon.

There’s a new Rivulets track called “Anymore” that features guitar loops by Remora. You can get the track free on the download free sampler link at SunSeaSky ( www.sunseasky.com ).

We have two new releases shipping out on pre-orders. You can order both disc as a bundle discount at our sale page ( www.silbermedia.com/sale ). Below are the press releases

GODDAKK: MONUMENT TO A RUINED AGE
Goddakk was started while Martin Newman was struggling to piece together the band Plumerai. It started as a project he had intended to form into a band that would take on dark, oppressive songs ala The Cure's Pornography. Seeing theremin player Pamelia Kurstin and the guitar works done by Silber head Brian John Mitchell as Remora impressed Newman with both of these artists ability to create huge soundscapes without other musicians. The appeal of not having to rely on anyone else as he’d been forced to do with his “normal” bands (burMonter, December Sundays) made him decide to keep Goddakk a solo project. The looping “theremin orchestra” of Pamelia was a big influence on how he worked the songs together with the reverse delay and later elements of his more traditional songwriting creeped in with more songlike structures. That fused with his desire for rhythm and structure (as opposed to noise for the sake of noise) led to the adding of Tricky inspired flow vocals run through a tremelo pedal giving tracks like “One Hundreds,” “Unfortunates,” & “Crucify You” more song-like qualities.
On Goddakk’s debut album Monument to a Ruined Age, the dominant instrument is a Fender VI bass run through loops & effects sounding like anything from a normal bass to breaking glass to a freight train. The final results end up sounding like a cross between Colin Newman, Coil, & The Legendary Pink Dots. An aggressive ambient music that could as easily fit the soundtrack to a David Lynch film as a car ride smuggling a dead body to Florida.

LYCIA: THE BURNING CIRCLE AND THEN DUST
Here at Silber we’ve been fans of Lycia since around 1992. In fact, we started Silber always hoping to put out Lycia records & now we’re re-releasing the five Lycia studio albums re-mastered by Lycia frontman Mike VanPortfleet. The darkwave classic The Burning Circle And Then Dust is our second installment.
The Burning Circle And Then Dust was a groundbreaking point in Lycia’s career. It marked a shift from more atmospheric music towards song-oriented music with tracks like “Pray” & “Slip Away.” It marked the first collaborations between Mike VanPortfleet & Lycia members David Galas & Tara Vanflower. It marked the transformation of Lycia into a honed out live touring machine.
Originally released as a double disc, VanPortfleet himself explained the truncation for the re-mastered The Burning Circle And Then Dust to a single disc. “Shortly after recording what would become disc one of the album David Galas & I were doing so well in the studio that we went on to record another ten songs with the intent of them possibly being used for compilation appearances. Though I thought most of the songs were stylistically different from the initial songs, when offered the possibility of releasing a double disc including the more recently recorded material I decided to go ahead & release the whole lot. Hindsight being 20/20 I have opted to hone the disc back down to my original vision.”

This first week of April we will be releasing Instruction Shuttle's Bound Sound. Bound Sound was originally released as a CDR in 2002. It is now freely available as an mp3 download at at Zenapoolae. From the website:

"Bound Sound was Instruction Shuttles first CDR release for Zenapolae. As such, it paved the way for not only the distictive sound of future Instruction Shuttle releases but also influenced other artists represented during those early days of Zenapolae. Instruction Shuttles's unique blend ambient soundscapes, dark drones, and glitchy rythms all come at the listener full force in this early release."

Zenapolae Back-Catalog: Choosing Pattern

For the month of March, we will be releasing a number of back -catalog items. Our Second back-catalog release is Choosing Pattern by bug. From the website...

"Choosing Pattern is an experiment in the creation of rhythm using records on turn tables and a standard DJ mixer with EQ. While this work is comprised of 7 "tracks", the progression from one "pattern" to another is continuous throughout the release. The rhythms were created by placing the turn table needle at the edge of the record label and adjusting the pitch control to create a tempo. As the two records rotate around the record label, they create repeating pops, clicks, and hisses. Variations can occur with each rotation differentiating one "loop" from another. Using the High, Mid, and Low EQ knobs on the DJ mixer and varying the "pitch" on each turn table can further differentiate the rhythms as they progress."

Check it out!

For the month of March, we will be releasing a number of back -catalog items, the first of which is proto(type). From the website...

"proto(type) was the first official zenas(prime) release. proto(type) was created with Audiomulch. In fact, all of these tracks were recorded in realtime during lull periods at work. Many songs were created by tweaking a base audio file and adding additional elements as needed. It is the glitch-squelch sound in these works that would come to represent the sound of zenas(prime) in future releases."

http://tribes.tribe.net/digitalsounddesigners

I started a new tribe for people who are specifically interested in
designing sounds, both digitally (and acoustically).

I wanted a place where people can share creative approaches,
share their own work, share the work of other sound designers that they
admire and discuss the specific tools of original sound design.

Come join us there if this sounds intriguing.
to be either

their favorite top two Dead Can Dance CDs

or

what they consider to be the most commercially successful of the
Dead Can Dance CDs.

I've heard the band but I don't own any of their CDs and don't really know their work.

hello,
we are organizing an event ( "dark" psytrance) in conjuction with the Spring Equinox. It's an indoor event taking place in SF on March 25th. We are looking for a dj to play a one hour opening set. Something slower in tempo, a bit "darker" in style than the typical psychill stuff. Original music would be awesome. Please email me at mistressofevilsf@gmail.com if you are interested! Thanks!
